Arab League chief calls on Sudan’s warring parties to reach ceasefire ahead of Ramadan

The chief of the Arab League has urged warring parties in Sudan to reach a ceasefire before Ramadan, warning of the ongoing bloodshed and wounds from the year-long war.

Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called on the Sudanese people to prioritize peace, dialogue, and the welfare of their homeland, and to silence the guns, heal wounds, and restore hope.

He reiterated that the Arab League is ready to support efforts to bring peace and stability to Sudan after months of devastating war has torn the country apart, claiming thousands of lives and causing massive damage to infrastructure.

Aboul Gheit highlighted the Arab League’s efforts to work with international partners, including the African Union, on ending the war.

Cooperation and coordination with the government of Sudan is crucial in ensuring the success of any peace deal, he added.

On April 15th, 2023, violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, resulting in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
