1,000 Days of Gaza War Marked by Massive Humanitarian Toll and Ongoing Uncertainty
—————————
One thousand days after the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, the conflict continues to have devastating humanitarian, political, and security consequences despite intermittent ceasefires and repeated diplomatic efforts.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched its Al-Aqsa Flood attack against Israel. Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign in Gaza that expanded into ground operations, triggering widespread destruction, mass displacement, and a prolonged humanitarian crisis.

Throughout the conflict, several temporary ceasefires and prisoner exchange agreements were brokered by regional and international mediators, but many collapsed as fighting resumed. Diplomatic initiatives by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and other mediators repeatedly sought to secure a lasting truce, the release of hostages, and increased humanitarian access.

The conflict also saw major legal and political developments, including South Africa’s genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice and arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes.

Although ceasefire agreements later reduced hostilities, aid deliveries remained limited and much of Gaza remained under Israeli military control. The conflict has displaced large numbers of Palestinians, severely damaged civilian infrastructure, and left the territory facing an ongoing humanitarian emergency, with reconstruction and a comprehensive political settlement still uncertain.
