Death Threats Against Michigan Mosque Prompt Hate Crime Charges, Renewed Concerns Over Islamophobia

Death threats targeting the Islamic Community Center of America, also known as the Imam Sadiq Center, have prompted hate crime charges against a Michigan man and renewed concerns among Muslim leaders about rising anti-Muslim rhetoric in the Detroit metropolitan area.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges against Christopher Andrew Lord, 35, following his arrest less than two days after authorities said he left voicemail messages containing explicit death threats and anti-Muslim hate speech directed at officials and members of the Islamic center. Prosecutors charged him with making a false terrorist threat and using a computer to commit a hate crime. If convicted, the charges carry penalties that include significant prison time.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said all residents, including Muslims, have the right to practice their faith free from intimidation, adding that authorities will not tolerate threats against places of worship or religious communities.

According to the Islamic Community Center of America, officials received two voicemail messages containing death threats and demands that Muslims leave the United States. The mosque notified families and congregants, implemented precautionary security measures, and worked with law enforcement, which increased its presence around the center before arresting the suspect.

The incident drew condemnation from community leaders and civil rights organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Arab American Civil Rights League, which called for the full prosecution of hate crimes and stronger protections for houses of worship. The organizations said attacks on mosques undermine religious freedom and constitutional rights.
