Gaza Journalists Demand Protection Amid Ongoing Targeting on World Press Freedom Day
————————————
On World Press Freedom Day, May 3, Palestinian journalists in Gaza held a protest calling for international protection and an end to the alleged targeting of media workers by Israeli forces. The rally took place outside a solidarity tent in the courtyard of the destroyed Rashad al-Shawa Cultural Center in western Gaza City.
Journalists from local and international media outlets, as well as representatives from human rights organizations, joined the protest. Participants raised banners demanding the protection of reporters, an immediate halt to direct targeting, and stronger guarantees for press freedom under the dire security and humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
Tahseen al-Astal, deputy head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, addressed the crowd, emphasizing that Palestinian journalists remain steadfast in their mission despite what he called Israel’s “systematic targeting” of media workers. He condemned the threats, killings, and destruction of media offices as violations of international humanitarian law and urged global institutions to provide tangible protection and accountability for journalists.
Ahed Farawna, secretary of the syndicate, described the ongoing targeting of Gaza’s journalists as “one of the gravest crimes against journalism in modern history,” citing the deaths of over 260 journalists since October 2023. The protestors called on the international community to turn verbal support for press freedom into concrete actions to ensure the safety and rights of journalists in Gaza.
