UN Secretary-General Warns of Worsening Global Inequality and Poverty
————————————–
New United Nations reports point to the continuing global poverty crisis, a situation the UN secretary-general says has left hundreds of millions of people living in difficult and unstable conditions.
The warning has once again drawn international attention to deep economic and social inequalities around the world.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a message on the social media platform X that around 800 million people worldwide are still living in extreme poverty.
According to a report published by Afghanistan’s Hasht-e Subh news outlet, Guterres said the situation has been worsened by armed conflicts, climate crises, rising inequality, and the heavy debt burdens facing many countries.
He also stressed the need to reform global economic structures, saying economies must be built in a way that prioritizes people.
The remarks come as UN assessments show that progress in reducing poverty has slowed in some parts of the world, while the most vulnerable communities remain directly exposed to the consequences of global crises.
