Italy’s Far-Right League Faces Complaint Over AI-Generated Hate Images

Italy’s far-right League party is under investigation following a complaint filed by opposition parties accusing it of spreading “racist, Islamophobic, and xenophobic” AI-generated images on social media, Arab News reported. The complaint, submitted to Italy’s communications watchdog Agcom, alleges the images portray immigrants and minorities as criminals, fueling hate and fear.

The images, shared by League leader and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, depict men of color armed with knives attacking women or police officers. Experts confirmed the images were artificially generated, with some faces blurred to mislead viewers into believing they were real.

If Agcom finds the League in violation, it could enforce actions under the EU’s Digital Services Act, including removing posts, shutting down accounts, or imposing fines on platforms for failing to moderate harmful content.

The League defended the posts, stating they reflect real incidents reported in Italian media and criticized attempts to censor debate. This case highlights growing concerns over AI’s misuse in spreading hate speech online.
