Europe is facing a significant weather shift as a long period of unusually dry conditions in the northwest is expected to end this week, The Guardian reported. Strong Atlantic weather systems are moving in, bringing much-needed rainfall to the UK, northern France, Benelux countries, and Germany, which have experienced only a fraction of their typical May rainfall. Powerful winds, reaching over 124 mph, will break up the persistent high pressure, leading to widespread rain beneficial for spring crops. Southern France and the Alps might see thunderstorms followed by snow in higher areas.
In contrast, southern Africa is preparing for a severe cold spell. Deep low-pressure systems off the coast will cause temperatures to drop significantly below average, accompanied by strong winds exceeding 50 mph and large waves along South Africa’s coast. Hazardous conditions are expected in the Mozambique Channel, and snowfall is anticipated in South African mountains. Similar cold and unsettled weather will affect southern Mozambique and Madagascar. These contrasting weather patterns highlight the unusual atmospheric activity impacting both regions.
