The United Nations Warns of Continued Attacks and Deteriorating Conditions for Rohingya Displaced Persons
The United Nations has warned of ongoing attacks and violations affecting hundreds of thousands of individuals from the Rohingya minority amidst escalating violence, declining levels of protection, and reduced humanitarian aid, while the prospects for their safe and sustainable return to their regions remain limited. On Saturday, August 29, the United Nations stated that the Rohingya in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and other areas face increasing insecurity and a decline in protection, alongside the risks of human trafficking and diminishing opportunities for finding sustainable solutions to their crisis.
The UN highlighted that the reduction in funding allocated for humanitarian response has increased the pressure on life-saving aid programs, as the ongoing conflict in Myanmar continues to impact the civilian population. According to the international organization, the Rohingya and other communities in Myanmar continue to face severe violations, including killings, arbitrary arrests, forced recruitment, and sexual violence, in addition to restrictions on freedom of movement and access to humanitarian aid.
The Rohingya have faced successive waves of displacement from Rakhine State over decades, with the largest wave occurring in August 2017 when approximately 750,000 individuals fled to Bangladesh as a result of violence. The United Nations has called on the international community for collective action to address the root causes of the crisis, enhance the protection of civilians, ensure the continuity of humanitarian assistance, and work towards creating the necessary conditions for safe and sustainable solutions for the displaced and refugee Rohingya.
