Ship Carrying 20,000 Liters of Fuel Sinks Off Greenland, Diesel Spill Threatens Arctic Ecosystem
A ship carrying 20,000 litres of diesel fuel sank off the coast of Greenland on Thursday after hitting a reef near Nanortalik, Dawn reported today.
The vessel, approximately 30 metres long, began taking on water around 1:45 AM and sank by 7 AM. Authorities are concerned about potential pollution in the fragile Arctic ecosystem and have deployed pumps and floating booms in a 50-metre perimeter to contain any spills.
While all crew members were safely evacuated, details about their numbers and nationalities remain undisclosed. The ship’s name and type have not been revealed, and it is currently impossible to assess the extent of any pollution. Efforts are underway to manage the situation and protect the surrounding environment.
