Wildfires in northern Japan enter fourth day, evacuations continue in Iwate

Wildfires in northern Japan continued to burn into a fourth day on April 25, as emergency crews intensified efforts to contain the blazes in Iwate Prefecture amid difficult weather conditions.

More than 1,200 firefighters have been deployed to tackle two major fires that broke out earlier in the week in mountainous and coastal areas. One of the most serious outbreaks is near the town of Otsuchi, where flames have approached residential neighborhoods.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of about 3,200 residents—roughly one-third of the town’s population—from more than 1,500 households. Evacuation centers have been set up as a precaution while fire crews work to prevent further spread.

Officials said the fires have scorched over 730 hectares of forest and damaged multiple structures. No deaths have been reported, though assessments of damage are ongoing.

Firefighting operations include coordinated ground teams and aerial water drops using helicopters, particularly in hard-to-reach terrain.

However, containment efforts are being complicated by dry conditions and forecasts showing little to no rainfall in the coming days. Authorities warned the fires could continue spreading if conditions persist.

The development is among the more severe wildfire incidents in Japan in recent years, reflecting growing concerns over increased fire risk linked to warmer temperatures and changing climate patterns.
