ASEAN Officials Commit to Sustainable Urban Development

Officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have reaffirmed their dedication to promoting sustainable urban development during a press conference in Vientiane on September 20, Xinhua reported today.

Following the ASEAN Capitals and ASEAN Mayors Forum, Ardsaphangthong Siphandone, mayor of Vientiane, emphasized the need for innovation and resource mobilization in alignment with the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the New Urban Agenda.

A significant outcome of the forum was the adoption of the Vientiane Declaration, which outlines strategies for ASEAN capitals to tackle urban development challenges. The declaration advocates for enhanced regional connectivity through improved transport networks and digital infrastructure, crucial for economic growth and cultural exchange.

Additionally, the officials recognized the urgency of addressing climate resilience amid rising urbanization and climate change impacts. They committed to prioritizing sustainable urban planning and environmental protection. The forum also highlighted the importance of empowering local populations, particularly vulnerable groups, by improving access to education and healthcare. Embracing digital transformation, smart city technologies, and preserving cultural heritage were identified as vital components for fostering sustainable urban growth across ASEAN cities.
