Freemuslim Association Calls on Tunisian Authorities to Ensure Democratic Integrity

The Global Nonviolence Organization, known as Freemuslim, has expressed deep concern regarding the transparency and integrity of the upcoming democratic process in Tunisia. This follows unconfirmed reports of the imprisonment and exclusion of several candidates vying for the presidency.

In a statement obtained by the Shia Waves Agency, the organization noted its awareness of media and human rights reports indicating that a Tunisian misdemeanors court has issued life sentences and exclusions against five political figures who intended to participate in the forthcoming presidential elections. Some observers have pointed out that these rulings are based on unconstitutional justifications, heightening concerns about the electoral process’s integrity.

The organization emphasized that Tunisia, still in the process of building and strengthening its democratic system after a period of dictatorship, urgently needs to guarantee political freedoms and provide fair opportunities for citizens to run for office and vote without political interference that could undermine democracy.

Freemuslim urged Tunisian authorities to earnestly work towards ensuring the transparency of the political process in accordance with fair and just standards, to avoid the concentration of power and the resurgence of tyranny or dictatorship. The organization also stressed the necessity of establishing the foundations of genuine democracy that uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms in the country.
