Sinjar Receives Remains of 25 Yazidi Genocide Victims 12 Years After ISIS Atrocities
—————————–
The remains of 25 Yazidi victims killed during the 2014 ISIS genocide have been returned to Sinjar after their identities were confirmed, bringing renewed attention to the thousands of families still awaiting answers about missing relatives.
The remains were transferred to Sinjar after forensic teams at Iraq’s Medico-Legal Directorate in Baghdad completed identification procedures, allowing the victims to be prepared for burial with dignity in the presence of their families and members of the local community.
The arrival ceremony at the memorial site included emotional scenes, including Yazidi Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad embracing the remains of her brother after years of waiting for confirmation of his fate.
Families of the victims have called for greater efforts to accelerate the identification process, return remaining remains to relatives and organize official ceremonies to preserve the memory of those killed.
The latest burials have once again highlighted the lasting impact of the 2014 ISIS genocide against the Yazidi community in Sinjar, where mass graves and missing persons remain among the most significant unresolved issues left by the group’s crimes in Iraq.
