Rights Group Warns of Rising Anti-Muslim Hate Speech in India After Two Controversial Cases
——————————–
An Indian rights platform has warned of growing concerns over anti-Muslim rhetoric after two separate incidents in September involving a Muslim police officer and an elderly Muslim man.
The independent rights platform Article-14 said the cases reflect broader concerns about the impact of anti-Muslim sentiment on the personal and professional lives of members of India’s Muslim minority.
One case involved Bushra Bano, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 2021 batch, who was reportedly transferred from her position as Deputy Superintendent of Police in Kharagpur, West Bengal, after criticism from right-wing social media accounts over a video in which she used Islamic greetings and expressions.
In a separate case, Article-14 highlighted the detention of an elderly Muslim man for three months despite reportedly possessing valid Indian documents, raising concerns over the treatment of members of the Muslim community.
The rights platform said the two incidents should be viewed beyond individual cases, arguing that they reflect wider concerns about the effects of hostile rhetoric toward Muslims and the potential consequences for citizens’ careers, security and social standing.
