Coordinated Attacks by Separatist Militias and Sunni Extremists Target Malian Military Positions

A series of coordinated attacks on several towns and military installations in Mali has further escalated tensions in the West African country.
In a statement, the Malian Armed Forces said military positions and a prison were targeted in synchronized assaults carried out by armed groups.
The military said government forces, supported by the Africa Corps, a Russian-backed military contingent, repelled the attacks and regained control of the affected areas, although clearance operations remain ongoing.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), more than 26 attackers were killed during the fighting, while one Malian soldier lost his life.
The attacks were reportedly carried out by a coalition comprising the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and Sunni extremist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda.
While the extremist factions are believed to be motivated by their militant Islamist ideology, a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front claimed that the group had launched an operation aimed at capturing the town of Anéfis.
The latest violence comes amid a prolonged insurgency in northern Mali, where separatist and jihadist groups have intensified attacks against government forces.
