Over 230,000 Displaced in DRC Amid Escalating Violence

The United Nations reports that more than 230,000 people have been displaced in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the start of 2025, marking one of the world’s most alarming humanitarian crises, Al Jazeera reported.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, highlighted that the ongoing conflict in the eastern provinces of North and South Kivu has led to significant human rights violations and forced displacements.

The M23 rebel group has intensified its control over large areas, recently capturing the town of Masisi. Clashes between armed groups and the Congolese army have exacerbated the situation, with approximately 150,000 people fleeing their homes in early January alone. Many have been forced to return due to renewed fighting.

Local governments, particularly in South Kivu, are seeking international assistance as conditions deteriorate. Civilians face indiscriminate violence, and humanitarian access is severely restricted. UNHCR has expressed readiness to assist but emphasizes the urgent need for additional funding.
