OpenAI Expands Global Push for AI Infrastructure and Government Use
………
OpenAI is stepping up efforts to persuade governments worldwide to build more data centers and expand the use of artificial intelligence in public sectors such as education, healthcare and disaster preparedness, as reported by Reuters. The company said the initiative aims to narrow the technology gap between countries with advanced AI access and those still developing capacity.
The program, known as OpenAI for Countries, is designed to broaden access to OpenAI products while encouraging governments to use AI more deeply. The company said many countries are not fully leveraging existing AI capabilities, despite their potential to support complex tasks across public services.
OpenAI launched the international initiative last year and appointed former UK finance minister George Osborne to oversee it in December. Osborne and OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane have been presenting the project to government officials this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
So far, 11 countries have joined the program under tailored agreements. Estonia is integrating ChatGPT Edu into secondary schools, while Norway and the United Arab Emirates are collaborating on data center development. OpenAI is also exploring projects in disaster planning, including a potential real-time water disaster warning system in South Korea.
