Following the veto of California Senate Bill 1047, which aimed to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) safety, industry experts are calling for a more nuanced approach to AI governance, Xinhua reported yesterday.

Governor Gavin Newsom rejected the bill, citing concerns over stifling innovation in California’s AI sector.

Kai-Fu Lee, CEO of Sinovation Ventures, emphasized that regulating immature technology poses challenges, suggesting that technological solutions, rather than strict regulations, may be more effective for AI safety. He advocated for adapting existing laws to address AI-related offenses, such as deep fakes and fraud.

Yangqing Jia, CEO of Lepton AI, warned that the proposed legislation could hinder the open-source community, which plays a crucial role in advancing AI awareness and capabilities. He expressed relief at the veto, believing it fosters a more open environment for discussing AI’s potential. Both experts underscore the need for careful consideration in regulating this rapidly evolving technology.
