The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported that at least 4,171 people were killed in extrajudicial killings, field executions and sectarian-related violence in Syria between December 8, 2024 and 2026.
The monitoring group said the documented deaths include victims of violence in Syria’s coastal region, the towns of Sahnaya, Ashrafieh Sahnaya and Jaramana, as well as incidents in Sweida province and other areas across the country.
According to the Observatory, the recorded violations included revenge killings, unlawful executions and attacks allegedly carried out on the basis of sectarian identity. It called for independent investigations, accountability for perpetrators and stronger protection for civilians.
The group said that in 2026 alone, 119 people were killed in extrajudicial revenge operations, including 108 men, eight women and three children. In 2025, it documented 1,201 such killings, including 23 children and 41 women.
The Observatory also reported that coastal violence in March 2025 resulted in the deaths of 1,683 civilians in 63 documented massacres, while clashes in Sahnaya, Ashrafieh Sahnaya and Jaramana in May 2025 killed 18 civilians. It said violence in Sweida during 2026 caused 990 deaths, including civilians, women and children.
The organization warned that continued unlawful killings represent a recurring pattern of violations affecting civilians across Syria and stressed the need for legal measures to prevent further abuses.
