Opposition militants declare Syria’s Damascus ‘liberated’, al-Assad ousted
Opposition fighters in Syria announced today, December 8, the end of Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule, claiming victory in Damascus following a swift offensive that began on November 27. During a live broadcast on Syrian national television, a leader from the opposition stated, “The tyrant al-Assad has been toppled,” and confirmed the release of prisoners from a major facility in the capital.
Reports indicate that al-Assad fled the city, with his current whereabouts unknown. In a video statement, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali asserted that the government was open to collaborating with the opposition and transitioning to a new governing body. He emphasized his commitment to remaining in the country and urged citizens to respect public property.
Celebrations erupted in Damascus, with residents chanting “Freedom! Freedom!” as opposition fighters entered the city. Videos circulated showing the removal of al-Assad’s images and jubilant crowds in various locations, including Latakia and along the Lebanese border. Hadi al-Bahra, head of the Syrian political opposition coalition, proclaimed Damascus “free of al-Assad,” congratulating the Syrian populace.
The armed opposition also reported advances in the western Deir Az Zor countryside. Observers noted that the collapse of the Assad regime could significantly impact the Middle East, underscoring the historical significance of this moment. Experts suggest that the regime’s downfall was inevitable due to its weakened military and lack of popular support, exacerbated by economic hardships and international sanctions.
As the situation unfolds, many Syrian refugees express hope of returning home, eager to reunite with families separated by years of conflict.
It should be mentioned that local sources have confirmed that the Holy Shrine of Sayyida Zainab and Sayyidah Ruqayya, peace be upon them both, is completely secure for the pilgrims despite the fast-unfolding military developments in the region, and promises have been made to allow safe pilgrimage for all devotees of the honourable daughter of Amir al-Mo’mineen and Aba Abdillah al-Hussen, peace be upon them.
