Saudi Arabia Executes Two Brothers Amid Ongoing Concerns Over Fair Trials
……………………

Saudi authorities executed two Saudi nationals on Tuesday, in a case that has drawn renewed scrutiny over the kingdom’s judicial practices and use of anti-terrorism laws. The Ministry of Interior announced the execution of brothers Mu’jil bin Ibrahim Al-Fawzan and Suleiman bin Ibrahim Al-Fawzan, stating they were convicted of committing what it described as “terrorist crimes.” The execution was carried out in the central province of Al-Qassim.

According to the ministry’s statement, the two men were allegedly involved in a “terrorist cell” that had plotted to attack personnel at a military base by monitoring vehicle movements and preparing for suicide bombings. They were also accused of pledging allegiance to the leader of a terrorist organization, financing terrorism, harboring supporters, and possessing weapons with the intent to undermine internal security.

The statement added that investigations led to their indictment and a subsequent court ruling sentencing them to death by ta’zir (discretionary punishment), which was carried out following due process. The execution comes amid a rising number of capital punishments in Saudi Arabia, drawing sharp criticism from international human rights groups.

Organizations have repeatedly called on the kingdom to ensure fair trial guarantees and to stop using terrorism charges in cases lacking transparency. Amnesty International has previously voiced concern over Saudi Arabia’s reliance on confessions allegedly obtained under torture and the broader lack of adherence to international standards of justice—particularly in trials involving activists, dissidents, and members of minority groups.
