Hindus, Muslims Protest Mosque Demolitions in Rajasthan Border Villages
——————————
Hindus and Muslims in Rajasthan’s border districts of Barmer and Jaisalmer have jointly protested against the demolition of mosques, dargahs, and madrasas, calling on the state government to halt the drive and follow due legal process.
The demonstrations, held under the slogan “Sarv Dharm Shanti Sabha” or “Peaceful Assembly of All Religions,” brought together villagers from both communities in areas including Badbir and parts of Jaisalmer. Protesters submitted memorandums to local authorities and accused officials of selectively targeting Muslim religious sites.
Village leaders said the demolitions were being carried out without proper consultation or legal procedure, warning that such actions threaten the region’s long-standing communal harmony. Hindu participants said the issue was not limited to one religion, but concerned the social fabric of villages where both communities have lived together for generations.
The protests come amid Rajasthan’s “Operation Sweep,” an anti-encroachment and security drive along the India-Pakistan border. Authorities describe the campaign as a security measure, while activists allege that rules are being applied unfairly against Muslim religious structures.
Civil rights groups have claimed that hundreds of mosques across border districts have received notices. Protesters say they will continue peaceful demonstrations and legal action until their concerns are addressed.
