Pakistani security forces killed 38 militants in a series of intelligence-based operations in the country’s northwest near the Afghan border, the military said Tuesday, The Associated Press reported. The raids targeted multiple hideouts linked to the Pakistani Taliban.

According to the military, the first operation took place Sunday in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where troops killed 10 fighters. A separate raid in North Waziristan eliminated five more militants, including a local commander.

On Monday, two additional operations in the Bajaur and Bannu districts left 23 militants dead. The military described those killed as “Khawarij,” a term officials use for fighters allegedly supported by Afghanistan and India—claims denied by both countries.

The Pakistani Taliban, a close ally of Afghanistan’s Taliban, have grown more assertive since the latter seized power in 2021, with many of their members believed to be operating from sanctuaries across the border.
