Pakistan: Amnesty Demands Investigation After Deadly Crackdown on PTI Protests

A violent crackdown on opposition protesters from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad resulted in multiple deaths and mass detentions during rallies on November 26 and 27. Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for South Asia, Babu Ram Pant, condemned the government’s actions, highlighting the unlawful use of force, including lethal ammunition, against demonstrators amid a communication blackout.

The PTI had organized protests on November 24, calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. In response, authorities disrupted internet services nationwide and detained approximately 4,000 PTI supporters before the protests. Clashes erupted as military forces were deployed, leading to reports of “shoot at sight” orders and the use of tear gas against protesters. The BBC confirmed at least six fatalities, including four security officers, while the exact number of injuries remains unclear due to restricted media access.

Amnesty International demands a thorough investigation into these human rights abuses.
