In a significant step to meet the needs of the growing Muslim community in the UK, the foundation stone for the “Wadi al-Hussein (peace be upon him)” cemetery was laid in Surrey, south of London. The project aims to provide a designated Islamic burial space that preserves the religious and cultural identity of Muslim community members.

The ceremony, attended by Murtaza Kashmiri, the representative of the Supreme Marja in Europe, as well as several members of the Muslim community, included a collective prayer followed by speeches highlighting the importance and religious significance of the project.

Religious experts have pointed out that the establishment of this cemetery addresses an urgent need, especially in light of the recent global health conditions. With the increasing number of Muslims in the region, having burial sites in accordance with Islamic teachings has become a pressing societal necessity.

The project was made possible by generous donors who provided a large piece of land within a multi-faith cemetery, allowing it to be integrated into the diverse social and religious fabric of the city, while maintaining Islamic practices related to burial and rites.

Speakers emphasized that the cemetery represents more than just a burial site; it symbolizes the connection between a person’s faith and their final rites, embodying the human dignity that Islam seeks to uphold throughout one’s life.

The cemetery project is expected to significantly enhance the religious and service infrastructure for Muslims in the UK, providing an appropriate environment for burial practices.
