Authorities in Kashmir have approved a budget for the restoration of a historic 17th-century mosque located in Malshahi Bagh, Gandarbal, originally built by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in honor of his spiritual mentor, Mulla Shah Badakhshi.
According to IQNA, following a visit by Omar Abdullah, the local government head, a preservation plan valued at 5 crore Indian rupees was sanctioned to rehabilitate the monument, which has suffered significant degradation over the centuries despite its central role in regional religious life.
The project aims to restore the mosque to its original condition, while preserving its traditional architectural features. Restoration work will be overseen by specialists to ensure both structural stability and historical authenticity.
Local residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing enthusiasm for the mosque’s revival and its cultural and spiritual significance. Many hope that the restoration will revive the mosque’s former grandeur, ensuring that it continues to serve as a landmark for future generations and a testament to Kashmir’s rich Mughal heritage.
