Iraq: New Mass Grave from 1988 Anfal Campaign Discovered in Duhok
………………..

A team from the Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Victims in the Kurdistan Regional Government uncovered a new mass grave in Mirgati village, Amadiya district, Duhok, containing the remains of seven men executed during the 1988 Anfal campaign by Saddam Hussein’s regime against the Kurdish population.

According to a ministry statement, the victims were local residents dressed in traditional Kurdish attire. Their remains will be transferred to a planned memorial in the village, honoring the families’ wishes.

Aram Nouri, director of mass graves at the ministry, explained that the seven men were arrested during the Anfal operations, shot in the desert, and buried without informing their families.

The recovery process involves two stages: first, exhuming the remains and conducting DNA testing at Duhok’s forensic department for precise identification; second, erecting a memorial to document the genocide and preserve the victims’ memory for future generations.

The ministry continues coordinating with Baghdad authorities to recover the remains of all Anfal victims buried in mass graves across and beyond the region.
