Joint Iraqi-US Operation Eliminates Senior Daesh Commander

Iraqi and US forces have killed a senior Daesh commander, Abu Ali Al-Tunisi, and several other militants in a joint operation in Anbar province, Arab News reported yesterday.

The operation, which began in late August, also involved Iraq’s National Intelligence Service and air force.

Al-Tunisi was on the US Treasury Department’s wanted list with a $5 million bounty. Ahmad Hamed Zwein, Daesh’s deputy commander in Iraq, was also among the dead.

Despite the defeat of Daesh in Iraq in 2017, attacks by sleeper cells have surged in recent years. Currently, about 2,500 US troops remain in Iraq, with a focus on transitioning their role in combating Daesh.
