Ceasefire Between Israel, Lebanon Takes Effect as Iran Keeps Strait of Hormuz Open

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has come into force with backing from the United Nations, while Iran announced that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz will remain open to commercial shipping during the truce.
A temporary ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has taken effect, accompanied by signs of reduced regional tensions after Iran confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz will remain fully open to international shipping during the truce.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said vessels would be able to transit safely through designated routes for the duration of the 10-day ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of maintaining access to one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
The move follows weeks of heightened risks to maritime traffic linked to tensions involving Iran, Israel and U.S. forces, which had prompted concerns among shipping operators and insurers over potential disruptions to global oil and gas supplies.
The ceasefire, which began at midnight between Thursday and Friday, aims to halt fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group and prevent a broader regional escalation.
António Guterres welcomed the truce, with his spokesperson stating that the United Nations supports efforts to end hostilities and reduce suffering on both sides of the Blue Line, the UN-demarcated boundary between Lebanon and Israel.
The UN chief expressed hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for renewed negotiations and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a long-term cessation of hostilities and stability along the border.
Guterres urges all actors to fully respect the ceasefire and to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, at all times. He further hopes that this agreement will contribute to ongoing efforts toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.
