Construction Begins on Northern Finland’s Largest Mosque in Oulu
——————————————————————-
The Muslim community in Oulu, northern Finland, has begun construction of what is expected to become the region’s largest mosque, relying entirely on public donations and without foreign funding.
According to Sua Press, the project involves renovating and equipping a former building in the Välivainio district and converting it into Al-Noor Mosque. The mosque will cover nearly 400 square meters and include separate prayer halls for men and women.
The center will become the second Muslim prayer facility in Oulu after the mosque opened in the Tuoppila district in 2016. It is intended to meet the needs of the city’s growing Muslim population, estimated at between 3,000 and 4,000 people.
Project officials said the mosque will also include educational and cultural spaces and will aim to promote constructive engagement with Finnish society and strengthen peaceful coexistence.
They added that, in order to respect the comfort of neighbors, the mosque will not use external loudspeakers.
