Egypt Considers Regulations on Children’s Mobile Phone Use Amid Growing Online Safety Concerns
——————————–
Egyptian authorities and legislators are preparing a legal framework to regulate children’s use of mobile phones, social media, and digital games amid rising concerns about online risks for minors.

In January 2026, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called on the government and the House of Representatives to draft legislation restricting mobile phone use by children until they reach an age considered responsible for handling modern technology. He said lawmakers should examine international approaches, such as those adopted by Australia and the United Kingdom, to inform Egypt’s regulatory efforts.

Following the president’s remarks, Parliament confirmed it is moving forward with consultations involving government bodies and experts to develop a draft law aimed at protecting children from potential harms linked to excessive mobile use and digital exposure. Lawmakers have described the challenges posed by “digital chaos” and emphasized the need for statutory safeguards for younger users.

Egypt’s National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) has also highlighted child protection in the digital space as a national priority, calling for stricter regulation of minors’ use of mobile phones, social media platforms, and electronic games to better shield children from harmful or age-inappropriate content and online risks.

In related developments, Egyptian authorities have taken specific measures this week to limit children’s exposure to certain digital platforms, including a nationwide ban on the online gaming platform Roblox, which officials cited as part of broader child safety concerns.
