Shafaq Online School Supports Afghan Girls as UN Urges Women’s Participation in Afghanistan’s Future

Shafaq Online School is continuing to provide education for girls in Afghanistan despite ongoing restrictions that bar girls from studying beyond the sixth grade.
Launched by education activist Safia Nab after schools and universities were closed to girls, the online platform allows female students across Afghanistan to continue learning and develop new skills. The school offers academic subjects as well as courses in life skills, psychology, story writing, translation, foreign languages, and vocational programs.
Teachers at the school also focus on mental health, including stress management, communication, decision-making, and self-confidence.
The initiative comes as restrictions on girls’ education in Afghanistan have continued for more than 1,747 days, depriving millions of girls of their right to study.
Meanwhile, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih said during a visit to Afghanistan that the country’s development and stability cannot be achieved without the participation of women and girls. He called for lifting restrictions on education and work, including the ban on Afghan women working in UN offices.
UN Development Programme chief Alexander De Croo also stressed that Afghanistan’s crises cannot be addressed without involving all citizens, including women, and called for education, work, and entrepreneurship opportunities for Afghan girls and women.
