UN Warns Earth Is Approaching Critical Climate Threshold as El Niño Intensifies Global Weather Risks

The United Nations has warned that the world is rapidly approaching a critical climate threshold, with global temperatures expected to exceed the 1.5°C warming limit above pre-industrial levels in the coming years, potentially by 2030. The warning comes amid growing concerns over rising temperatures, record ocean heat, and the strengthening impacts of the El Niño climate phenomenon.

The UN said global temperatures are currently around 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, with the effects of climate change already visible in many regions. These include worsening droughts threatening agricultural production, increasing wildfires in parts of southern Europe, accelerated glacier melting, and record-high ocean temperatures.

The organization highlighted the risk of climate “tipping points” that could trigger irreversible changes, including the accelerated melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, disruption of Atlantic Ocean circulation patterns, and the transformation of the Amazon rainforest from a major carbon absorber into a potential source of emissions.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has also warned of severe weather impacts linked to an unusually strong El Niño event, which is expected to continue in the coming months. The agency said climate models show a near certainty that El Niño will persist, with exceptionally high temperatures recorded in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

El Niño, a natural climate cycle that occurs every two to seven years, is caused by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific and weakened trade winds. The phenomenon can alter global weather patterns, contributing to extreme heat, droughts, floods, and disruptions to rainfall.

According to WMO data, sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific are currently between 2.2°C and 2.6°C above the long-term average, while some subsurface ocean temperatures exceeded 8°C above average during July and early August — levels described as exceptional.

The WMO noted that the effects of El Niño are already being felt in some tropical regions, including areas facing agricultural challenges and food insecurity due to drought and disrupted rainy seasons. The UN has stressed that while El Niño itself is a natural phenomenon and not caused by climate change, global warming can intensify its impacts and increase the risks facing vulnerable communities.

Despite the worsening outlook, the UN emphasized that opportunities remain to limit long-term damage. Experts say that rapidly reducing fossil fuel use could allow global temperatures to peak below 1.8°C before declining, provided that countries significantly cut emissions, restore ecosystems, and develop technologies to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The UN noted that achieving climate goals will require reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and removing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through both natural solutions, such as reforestation and ecosystem restoration, and technological approaches.

The organization also highlighted progress achieved through the Paris Agreement, noting that projected warming has declined from a previous trajectory of around 3.6°C by 2100 to current estimates of approximately 2.6°C. Renewable energy and electric transportation have expanded rapidly, with global solar power capacity growing at an unprecedented pace.

However, global greenhouse gas emissions have yet to begin declining, remaining at historically high levels. UN officials and climate experts continue to call for urgent international action to reduce emissions, strengthen early warning systems, and prepare communities for increasing risks from heatwaves, droughts, floods, and changing weather patterns.
