Bahrain al-Khalifa forces fired tear gas at several dozen people protesting the execution by Saudi Arabiaon Saturday of a prominent Saudi Shia cleric, an eyewitness said. Demonstrators carrying pictures of the cleric, Nimr al-Nimr, faced security forces in a standoff in the Shia village of Abu-Saiba, west of the capital Manama.
Nimr was attacked and arrested in the Qatif region of Eastern Province in July 2012, and has been charged with undermining the kingdom’s security, making anti-government speeches, and defending political prisoners. Nimr has denied the accusations.
