Bangladesh arrests village council members over fatwa of caning, stoning women

In Bangladesh, a Muslim scholar and three village elders were taken into custody by the police on accusations of instructing the punishment of a woman who was accused of having an extramarital affair.

Police officials said on Monday, the woman was ‘caned 82 strokes’ and ‘stoned 80 times’ with small bricks after an imam issued a fatwa against her as a punishment.

The woman claims she has been the victim of terrible injustice, describing the experience as outrageous.

The fatwa has caused a stir, with women’s rights groups and activists protesting and calling for the prosecution of those responsible.

It should be mentioned that adultery is a serious crime and grave sin according to Islamic laws.

However, multiple conditions are rigorously evaluated in the process of proving the case and issuing the penalty.
