Iran explosions spark press freedom fears

Journalists in Iran are raising alarms over a potential media crackdown following a series of deadly incidents, including two explosions and a cyber-attack, The Guardian reported. The latest blast occurred at a chemical company in Isfahan, killing one person and injuring two.

This followed a major explosion at a southern port that killed at least 70 people and injured over 1,000, and a thwarted cyber-attack days earlier targeting communications infrastructure.

Authorities have ruled out foreign sabotage in the port explosion, citing negligence and improper storage of hazardous materials. However, growing suspicion of a cover-up has intensified after media outlets and activists were warned against reporting unofficial details.

Customs failures, port overcrowding, and lack of safety protocols are under investigation, while access to information remains limited. Officials have warned against trusting foreign media, and local reporters say they face legal threats for sharing details online or conducting on-the-ground coverage.
