Activists Raise Concerns Over Restrictions on Shia Religious Practices in Bahrain

Activists have expressed growing concerns over the situation of religious freedom and the practice of Shia rituals in Bahrain, citing trials of religious scholars and clerics, as well as reported restrictions affecting religious activities, Husseiniyas, and related institutions.

According to activists, a number of Shia religious figures, including scholars, preachers, imams, and Husseiniya workers, have faced legal proceedings, with reports of arrest warrants issued for more than 40 figures. They called for transparency in judicial procedures and guarantees of fair trials, including clear evidence and protection of defendants’ rights.

Concerns have also been raised over reported restrictions on Shia religious ceremonies, including Husseini processions, the use of external sound systems at religious centers, and activities connected to religious commemorations. Activists also highlighted disputes related to religious endowments and difficulties some citizens face when traveling to visit holy sites in Iraq and Iran.

They urged authorities to distinguish between genuine legal violations and peaceful religious practices, calling for measures that protect freedom of belief and the right to perform religious rites.

The activists emphasized that transparent investigations and respect for legal safeguards are essential to building trust and ensuring the rights of all communities in Bahrain.
