UN warns millions of Afghan girls may be denied education by 2030

The United Nations has raised concerns that by 2030, four million Afghan girls could be deprived of education due to ongoing restrictions. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that these limitations continue to hinder access to learning, expressing hope that progress will be made to reverse them.

A recent UNICEF report highlights the worsening situation, revealing that 400,000 girls will be excluded from the educational system in the upcoming academic year. The report also notes that the number of girls missing out on secondary education has now reached 2.2 million. If restrictions persist, UNICEF warns that this figure could rise to four million by the end of the decade.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, schools for girls above the sixth grade have largely remained closed, despite repeated calls from the international community to lift the ban. Advocacy groups and global organizations continue to urge Afghan authorities to ensure equal access to education.

Efforts to address the crisis, including providing resources and support for alternative learning opportunities, are seen as crucial. The UN emphasizes that securing education for all Afghan girls is essential for their future and the country’s long-term development.
