The United Nations human rights office has launched an appeal for $500 million in funding for 2025, warning that a shortfall could have serious consequences for global human rights efforts.
Speaking at the UN in Geneva, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said ongoing crises worldwide, from Syria to Sudan, will require sustained support.
Turk cautioned that without sufficient funding, human rights violations may go undocumented, detainees could remain in illegal detention, and vulnerable groups might lose protection.
The office receives about 5% of its budget from UN member state contributions, with the majority coming from voluntary donations. Concerns have been raised over potential reductions in US foreign aid, which could further impact the office’s ability to carry out its work.
