Racial discrimination on rise in Sweden’s schools, new report reveals

A report from Sweden’s Equality Ombudsman reveals a significant rise in racial discrimination in schools, with 514 complaints filed last year. Of these, 20% involved racist incidents targeting students of African descent.

The report criticizes the education sector’s lack of effective anti-discrimination strategies, noting the severe psychological and social toll on affected students.

In response, Stockholm’s city council announced a comprehensive plan to combat racism and discrimination in both public and private schools, labeling the findings as “extremely serious” and calling for urgent action.

Rights groups and local authorities have also urged stronger measures to promote awareness and ensure safe, equitable learning environments for all students.
