Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Iraq’s 1920 Revolution stands as a rare blow to British colonialism
The Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Sadiq Al-Husseini Al-Shirazi, emphasized that Iraq’s glorious 1920 Revolution delivered a significant blow to British colonialism, crediting it to the unity of the Iraqi people around their religious leadership.
In remarks posted on the official website on the 105th anniversary of the revolution, the Grand Marja highlighted that this historic uprising followed a powerful call to resistance issued by Ayatollah Sheikh Mirza Muhammad Taqi Al-Shirazi.
Grand Ayatollah Shirazi praised the courageous role of the Iraqi tribes who stood united behind the religious authority, saying, “The Iraqi people, led by Sheikh Taqi Al-Shirazi and the faithful Iraqi tribes, confronted British colonialism as a united front despite numbering less than five million.”
His Eminence noted that this remarkable triumph by the Iraqi tribes, despite limited resources, stands as a “rare blow in British history.” The 1920 Revolution, initiated by Sheikh Mirza Al-Shirazi’s call against British occupation, remains a foundational event that shaped Iraq’s modern political history and fostered national unity against colonialism.
