Internal armed fighting plagues Rohingya minority in Myanmar: UN rights chief

The UN human rights chief expressed concern about the severe impact of ongoing armed battles between the ruling junta in Myanmar and the opposition groups on the Rohingya community in Myanmar, particularly in Rakhine State.

The military’s actions have resulted in numerous civilian casualties and the displacement of thousands of people. In 2023, the UN official noted, 1,600 civilians were reportedly killed by the military, adding that 26,000 people have arrested on political grounds, with 19,973 remaining in detention.

The UN commissioner called for accountability for the military’s leadership, the release of political prisoners, and the restoration of civilian rule in Myanmar. He also highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis faced by displaced Rohingya in neighboring Bangladesh.
