Madagascar: Death toll from Cyclone Gamane climbs to 18

As of Saturday, Cyclone Gamane in Madagascar has resulted in 18 deaths, with nearly 50,000 people affected in 13 districts, Anadolu Agency reported.

According to Madagascar’s National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management, 8,958 houses were flooded and 2,013 buildings were destroyed.

The report indicates that the affected regions include Sava, Diana, and Analanjirofo, with most victims dying from drowning, falling trees, or being washed away.

Evacuation and humanitarian aid operations are ongoing, with plans to deliver aid by air within the next 24 hours, authorities confirmed.

Madagascar is known as one of the top 10 most disaster-prone countries and the most cyclone-prone country in Africa, according to USAID.
