Deadly Fire in New Delhi Hotel Kills at Least 21; Majority Are Foreign Nationals

At least 21 people were killed and more than 40 others rescued after a massive fire broke out early Wednesday morning in a five‑storey building that housed a hotel and restaurant in Malviya Nagar, a crowded neighbourhood in southern New Delhi, police and media reported.
The blaze erupted at around 8:50 a.m. local time at the Flourish Stay bed‑and‑breakfast, which operated above a ground‑floor restaurant. Firefighters brought the fire under control with the assistance of eight fire engines, while local residents helped evacuate people trapped by thick smoke and flames.
Authorities said most of the dead were foreign nationals, many of whom were believed to be in India for medical treatment, according to press reports.
The fire has sparked a police investigation and a culpable homicide case was registered. Early inquiries are examining whether the hotel was operating beyond its permitted capacity and lacked key safety approvals, including a mandatory fire safety No Objection Certificate.
In the wake of the tragedy, city officials announced plans to strengthen enforcement of fire safety regulations and conduct inspections of hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments to prevent similar incidents.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, and the government announced financial assistance for their next of kin.
