Eid al-Adha Practices Spark Tensions in Parts of India

Tensions over Eid al-Adha practices have surfaced in parts of India, including a dispute at a housing complex near Mumbai where goats brought for Qurbani triggered protests, clashes, and police deployment. The incident comes amid wider restrictions and disputes over public Eid prayers and animal sacrifice in several Indian states.
A residential complex in Mira Road, near Mumbai, witnessed communal tension ahead of Eid al-Adha after Muslim residents brought goats and sheep for the Qurbani ritual.
Local media reported that the dispute began at Poonam Cluster housing society after some residents objected to animals being kept inside the premises. Reports placed the number of animals at around 40 to 50, while objecting residents argued that sacrifice should take place only at officially designated locations.
The situation escalated after municipal authorities removed temporary shelters set up for the animals. Some residents later attempted to restore them, leading to confrontations and minor injuries.
The incident drew wider attention after members of Hindu groups reportedly attempted to bring a pig near the protest site, a move Muslim residents viewed as provocative. Police deployed forces in the area, removed the animals, and worked to prevent further escalation.
The Mira Road dispute was not isolated. In another Mumbai-area case, a planned goat sacrifice at a housing society in Goregaon was called off after clashes between residents.
Elsewhere in India, Eid-related restrictions also drew attention. In Uttar Pradesh, authorities reiterated that Eid prayers should not be offered on public roads and advised mosques to arrange prayers in shifts where necessary. In Delhi, officials ordered that animal sacrifice be carried out only at authorised locations and warned against the slaughter of prohibited animals.
Muslim community leaders in several areas urged worshippers to follow local laws while also calling for non-discriminatory enforcement and respect for religious practices.
