Record Drought Hits 60% of the United States, Raising Wildfire Risks

Around 60 percent of the United States is experiencing drought conditions, marking the highest level of drought recorded in early April since 2000 and raising concerns over an intense wildfire season, particularly across the central and southern Great Plains.

The drought follows record-high temperatures in March, combined with sharply reduced rainfall and snowfall. The conditions are putting pressure on water supplies and increasing the risk of wildfires across large parts of the country, according to Bloomberg.

Higher temperatures and a lack of precipitation have further dried out soil and vegetation, creating conditions that could allow fires to spread rapidly, especially across agricultural areas and grasslands.

The developments come as the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that global average temperatures in March were about 1.48 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, underscoring the persistence of unusually high global temperatures.

Forecasters are also monitoring the possibility of an El Niño event returning during the coming summer, which could bring further changes to temperature and precipitation patterns in different parts of the world.
