Writ Petition Filed in Bangladesh High Court to Ban Indian TV Channels

A writ petition has been submitted to the Bangladesh High Court seeking a ban on Indian television channels, citing concerns over their impact on Bangladeshi culture, Muslim Mirror reported yesterday.

Petitioners argue that Indian media is eroding local traditions and misrepresenting Bangladesh, which could harm the country’s image abroad.

The petition, filed by lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, claims that Indian shows and advertisements promote materialism and violence, which are deemed inappropriate for Bangladeshi audiences. It emphasizes that Indian content does not align with the cultural and social values of Bangladesh, particularly affecting the youth.

The petitioners have requested the High Court to direct the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to stop the transmission of Indian broadcasts. The court has acknowledged the petition and scheduled a hearing later this month, where it will evaluate the legal basis for the proposed ban, sparking discussions on cultural preservation and media regulation.
