Monsoon Floods Batter Bangladesh, Eight Dead, Millions Displaced

Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Bangladesh, causing major rivers to burst their banks. The death toll has climbed to eight, with over two million people affected by the flooding, TRTWorld reported yesterday.

Teenage boys were among the victims, perishing when their boat capsized in floodwaters. Electrocution incidents from submerged power lines claimed additional lives.

The government has scrambled to provide relief, opening shelters and dispatching aid to the hardest-hit northern districts. Authorities warn the situation may worsen as the Brahmaputra River continues to swell.

Bangladesh faces the brunt of annual monsoon rains, but scientists warn climate change is making these events more frequent and intense.
