Georgia Declares Ashura an Official Holiday in Shia-Majority Areas
——————————–
Authorities in Georgia have declared Ashura an official holiday in several Shia-majority areas, in a move that reflects attention to religious and cultural diversity and respect for the religious occasions of different communities.

The decision includes cities and regions with large Shia populations, including Marneuli and Gardabani, allowing citizens to take part in ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and the annual Ashura events held in these areas.

The measure comes in recognition of the religious significance of Ashura for the Shia community, whose members mark the occasion through Husseini gatherings, mourning processions, and various religious and cultural activities.

Southern Georgia is considered one of the main centers of Shia presence in the country, where wide-ranging Muharram events are held each year to recall the uprising of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and its values of justice, sacrifice, and steadfastness.

Observers say designating an official holiday for the occasion reflects the Georgian authorities’ keenness to respect the religious and cultural particularities of different communities and to promote coexistence and understanding among followers of various faiths and sects.

Shia-majority areas in Georgia witness broad participation in Ashura ceremonies every year, with religious and social organization aimed at commemorating the occasion and reinforcing the human values represented by the tragedy of Karbala in Islamic consciousness.
