Scholars, religious leaders and social activists in Lucknow, India, have called for preserving the sanctity of Husseini mourning gatherings and confronting practices they described as superstitious or inconsistent with the values of Ashura.

The call came during a specialized religious seminar titled The Greatness of Mourning and the Sanctity of the Infallible Imams, peace be upon them. The event was organized by Tanzeemul Makatib and attended by a wide range of scholars, intellectuals and community figures.

According to the Shia newspaper Sarfraz, one of Lucknow’s long-standing print media outlets, participants warned against growing trends of showmanship, unhealthy competition among mourning groups and the use of inappropriate expressions in elegies and mourning recitations.

Speakers stressed the need to protect the ideals of the uprising of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and to present the culture of Ashura in a clear and authentic way.

The discussions focused on several issues, including the supervision of pulpit content, a return to traditional forms of mourning, avoiding superstition and self-display, maintaining hijab in gatherings, ensuring programmes do not overlap with prayer times, and countering harmful anti-mourning activity on social media.

Participants concluded by emphasizing that Husseini gatherings should strengthen religious identity, preserve authentic traditions and explain the true culture of the sacred values associated with Ashura.
